BIO

Taylor Winn focused on art at an early age.  He sold his first paintings at age 17 and went on to earn his BA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin. For two consecutive years (2005, 2006) Winn was the Juror’s Prize recipient of the Austin Contemporary Jones Center Ahead of Their Time exhibition. Inspired by the physical approach of post-war Abstract Expressionist painters, Winn's highly gestural, large-scale, abstract environments of color span to 16 feet in dimension. His early Pollock-style paintings were analyzed by researchers at Stanford University, Menlo Park and Stony Brook University in published studies (2009, 2011) in developing fractal analysis authentication of Jackson Pollock’s works.

The artist’s 2011 solo exhibit, Taylor Winn Large Works 2005 – 2011,
at the University of Texas at Austin, featured a collection of large wall-sized canvases with signature comets, tornadoes and bubbling rivers of paint exhibiting the artist’s commitment to color and the properties of his materials. In 2012, Winn’s painting, On the Lake, was selected by Austin Art Boards for a year-long rotation in Austin as a 14 x 48-foot billboard featuring Winn's signature calligraphy as an abstraction of the wakes and trails left by skiing and sailing on the lake. In his 2013 solo exhibit at Austin's Bass Concert Hall, Taylor Winn XL Paintings, Winn presented a selection of his largest works from the XL series featuring signature coiling white calligraphy and black linear forms traversing distinctively wide fields of color. In 2014, Winn was named a Hunting Art Prize finalist for work in his Melts series of paintings.  Currently, Winn is developing his Melts style of painting for larger panoramic format panels. Working on large-scale canvas and panel using repurposed paints, paint skins, Venetian plaster and metallic alkyds at his studios on Rainey Street and on Barton Creek in Austin, Texas, Taylor Winn has exhibited at regional and national venues since 2005.

STATEMENT

‘Color, process and materials define my art. My colors are rooted in nature, personal history and modern culture and amplified by cracking, bubbling, pigment separation and oil slicks on the surface of my work.  My current body of work, the Melt paintings, references the colors, geography and movement of bodies of water, the sky and the earth in graphic yet painterly abstractions of waves breaking on the ocean, sun and moonlight on the water, cracking ice, flowing lava. My approach to painting comes from a natural inclination to experiment with materials and to find new ways of using paint to coerce color into visually interesting forms.  I like the idea of viewers connecting to the work by visualizing the action involved in each production. I work solely by hand, using sticks and gravity after applying several layers of paint from above and around all sides of a painting. My intuition about how paint behaves derives from repeated experimentation with paint body composition, pigment, sheen and viscosity. Unique delivery of beautiful color and the forms of nature is my goal. Beyond function or interpretation, I want viewers to see the color dynamics and raw materials within each of my works – seeing the whole for the larger, gestural action and up close for the smaller, chemical action occurring within the materials.’
